DBSA premieres a powerful new documentary short that follows the life of John Budin, MD, a respected psychiatrist who felt compelled to hide his own mental health condition for nearly 35 years.

DBSA had humble beginnings. Learn about DBSA’s early days and how the Depressive and Manic Depressive Association became a national organization from Founder Rose Kurland and other early pioneers.

For Chapters and Support Group Members

We hope that you and many of your DBSA colleagues will join us in sharing information, learning from session presenters, facilitators, and one another, and growing in our various leadership roles within DBSA.

Support Group Facilitator Training Track

This revised format is suitable for new and experienced support group facilitators. This session will include a lecture, interactive feedback, Q&A, work-group sessions, and role-plays. Facilitators will learn together:

  • What are the basics of DBSA Support Group facilitation?  Do all DBSA Support Groups look the same?
  • How do I know how to work with different personas who come to my group? What are some strategies to work with each of them?
  • Can I get some (more) experience in using some of my learnings before I facilitate an actual group?

Presidents and Executive Directors Track

Peers serving as DBSA Presidents or Executive Directors will experience sessions featuring lectures, interactive feedback, Q&As, and work-group sessions. Topics include:

  • Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, Fiduciary Responsibility: Do you know the basics of governance and the standards to which volunteer board members are held?
  • Affiliation/Re-affiliation with DBSA National: What does DBSA Affiliation really mean? What can I expect from DBSA National and what does DBSA National expect of my Chapter?
  • Planned and unexpected changes: How do you plan for both the expected and unexpected through succession planning and policies?

DBSA’s programs educate peers, friends, and families. We also advocate for placing peers at the forefront when determining needs and best practices for mental health services. Join us on one of these tracks!

Supporting Youth Mental Health: Creating Wellness Track

Parents, peers, clinicians, educators, young adults will experience a session featuring panels, lectures, interactive feedback, and talk-back sessions. Topics include:

  • Creating Wellness
    See how DBSA is supporting children, teens, young adults, caregivers, and families, including their newest resource for children, the Mood Crew. (You might even get to meet them!)
  • Envisioning Wellness
    We’ll examine the path to wellness through understanding what wellness means beyond symptom reduction as well as explore what wellness means to young adults.

Advocacy Track

Peers and advocates will experience a session featuring panels, lecture, interactive feedback, Q&As, and work-group sessions. Topics include:

How can we ensure our collective voices make a difference? These sessions will share how you can position peers in the center of decision-making and as the drivers of systemic change.

How you can:

  • Use DBSA programs to change public attitudes about mental health
  • Deploy simple techniques to engage chapter participants in legislation and public policy
  • Promote the value of peer support, including broadening adoption of peer support specialists throughout mental health delivery
