We are deeply grieving the death of our beautiful daughter, Anya Kathryn Vykopal, on June 17, 2020.  She died from multiple organ failure due to alcoholism; she had used alcohol for many years to self medicate her bipolar disease. She was 36 years old. Although she had a mood disorder psychiatrist, attended rehab several times, and had a supportive family, she still succumbed.

Anya graduated from Mary Institute Country Day School, where she received honors for science and art, as well as the lifelong learning award her senior year. She graduated from Cornell University in 2006, with a double degree in landscape architecture and plant science. Recently, she received her Master’s in Nursing from St. Louis University.

We will remember Anya for her love of native plants, her extraordinary talent as a ceramic sculptor, her curiosity when traveling, and her wonderful smile and hugs.

Your gift will support the establishment of a new Sunday support group for people with both a mood disorder and substance abuse disorder. Contributions may be made to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance on this page or by mail to 55 E. Jackson Blvd, Suite 490, Chicago, IL  60604.

Despite his 50 plus years struggle with bipolar disorder, self-doubt & self-criticism, & thoughts of suicide, Bob accomplished a lot in his life. His love of medicine and passion for his patients drove him to achieve his professional goals. He earned a PhD in physical science followed by an MD. His career in medicine started in Delaware and ended in North Carolina. During that time, he even traveled to Thailand to study infectious diseases. His patients adored him and sought out his services because of the tenacity, attention to detail, and at times, comic relief he provided.

He enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life including soccer, racquetball, and many outdoor activities including backpacking, canoeing, and even led long-distance cycling trips for youth groups in his younger years. He loved the older model BMWs & was an active member of the BMW Club of America participating in many of the local chapter events including many driver schools held at racetracks on the east coast. Bob had a great love for sports, classical and jazz music, & was a voracious reader.

Most of all, he was a loving husband, father, & grandfather. His family will cherish those memories of a sensitive, kind, caring, intelligent, & witty man who could be harder on himself than on anyone else.

Kayla loved the theatre, traveling the world, and she loved her family more than anything. Her joy, beautiful spirit and light were contagious and you couldn’t help but love her instantly. She was brave and outspoken yet loving and caring. Her mission was to become vocal about living with Bipolar and to be an integral part in breaking down the stigmas that surround mental illness. She was determined to better understand her own battle with Bipolar so she could help others who suffered from the same.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to her memorial page. Our family is grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this very difficult time.

“Tell me, what is it that you plan to do

With your one wild and precious life?”

Kara will always be a unique and bright light in the world. She struggled with the label of bipolar disorder, as she believed people were always more than a diagnosis. Her struggle with mental illness challenged her to adapt in ways that she found difficult to adopt. Her family firmly believes that the ways to combat this disease are through education, support, and destigmatization of mental illness. Their hope is that by contributing to support and education about mental health, families and individuals struggling with bipolar disorder and depression can live full healthy supportive lives with their loved ones.

Kara had an eccentric personality that encouraged everyone around her to be happy. Whether it was wearing unicorn slippers, pineapple shirts, 1980’s ski jackets or any other type of attire, Kara had a way of making everyone smile and look her way when she entered a room. Her confidence and exuberance for life was infectious. She was an amazing, energetic, curious, and generous young woman. Her colorful personality lent itself to family game nights, learning ukulele, playing rugby, earning her black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and travelling the world to experience the full palette of life’s beautiful details. She is remembered for her infectious laughter, for the love she brought to everyone in her life, and for never being afraid to challenge those closest to her to improve. Kara stood out amongst her siblings for her strong will, deep convictions and indomitable spirit. Her passion for life is unmatched and will forever inspire all of us. We will continue to live out her legacy by holding our loved ones close and giving ourselves to others unconditionally.

It is with great sadness to announce that our good friend Allen Prosk has passed away.

Allen was a kind and gentle soul and a friend to everyone he knew. He touched the lives of many and was beloved by all that knew him. For years Allen was tormented with the pain of major depression and succumbed to his illness.

Allen was most happy spending time with friends, working as a Psychiatric Nurse and sailing. He loved the water.

In the words of Mother Teresa:

“We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being alone, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of poverty.”

As a tribute to Allen, let’s make sure we let those struggling with depression know that they are not alone, that they are loved and you care for them.

Trevor was a kind and gentle soul who sadly was tormented by bipolar disease. He always tried so hard to do what was right and to be a friend to everyone he knew. His life touched so many people and he and his family were always so supportive of each other. Trevor has finally found peace and tranquility. H should be remembered as the essence of who he was. His legacy is that we should all find the peace that so eluded him on this earth,as he was kind, thoughtful and generous.

Zachary Granger, 24, of San Leon, Texas passed away on July 13th, 2015. Zac was born on September 1, 1990 in Galveston, Texas. He attended Dickinson High School and ran wild in San Leon, Texas for most of his life. He loved his community and was fiercely protective of his close friends and family. Zac touched the lives of everyone he knew with his quick wit and sense of humor; always ready to give a hug, a helping hand or a punch, whatever was required. He had a huge heart and often brought friends home when they needed a place to stay. Through Zac’s generous heart, his parents gained “adopted” kids who have become family. Zac fought hard to find his way in life, struggling with his inner demons, but never lost that generous spirit. Zac will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Please hug a loved one and take a moment to express the value they bring to your life and consider donating a few dollars in Zac’s memory.

What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.

Taylor Kendall A. Joseph was born on May 6, 1993 at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Taylor was home schooled in North Carolina, where she received her GED when she was sixteen years old.

When Taylor arrived in Brooklyn, N.Y., she attended Kingsborough Community College where she received an A.A. Degree in Liberal Arts. Taylor went on to NYU where she majored in Psychology with the intention of transferring to Pre-Med. She shared with me that she was very proud of her accomplishments. At Kingsborough and NYU she minored in drama, music, and theater. Taylor also took part in various other dramatic productions. She was a songwriter, piano player, and an all-around entertainer. She appeared in plays and also performed Off-Broadway and in many other productions including the Tribeca Film Festival. Taylor also taught acting lessons for up and coming young students at the Door on Broom Street, New York, N.Y.

She leaves to mourn, her Father Edwidge N. Joseph, her Mother Dawn M. Austin, her Stepmother Kara J. Miller, her siblings Christi-An Austin-Joseph, Matthew S. Joseph, Dakota S. Austin, her grandparents Leo and Circee Joseph, Sylvia Austin, and she was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather Nathaniel Brown, her aunts Sheila Asson and her husband Edmund Asson, Shirley Joseph, Andrea Austin, and her cousins Christopher Brignolle, Colin and Ellis Asson, Jordan J. Austin, nephew Ayden T. Atisme and a host of other family and friends.

Taylor was able to live the last few years of her life as a free spirit. She was fun-loving and had a bubbly personality. Her exciting and tenacious spirit was contagious. Her bright personality and caring spirit captivated all those around her. She commanded attention in every room and situation she entered. Taylor could talk to anyone about anything. She had a way of making people feel like they knew her forever. Her giggle and smile filled the hearts of all her friends. She loved to party. She eagerly pursued her passion. She loved to sing, dance and act. She would perform at the drop of a dime. So, this is for you Taylor. Here is a round of applause for your Grand Finale. Take your bow, Baby Girl. We love you!

Excerpt from Nicole’s (Quinton’s Mom) Funeral Speech

Hello Everyone,

As some of you know Quinton had Bi-polar disorder with paranoid delusions and psychosis. The most painful days of my life were the first time he was admitted to the hospital for psychiatric care. He was in 9th grade, there was a lot of turmoil in our family and the school sent him to the emergency room in an ambulance. After a few days he was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for a little over a week.

During that time I felt deep immobilizing depression. I couldn’t function normally, I couldn’t stop crying, it felt like my brain had just broke and my body ached. After that incident Quinton was hospitalized for psychiatric care two more times before moving back to Santa Barbara.

There was nothing more painful than watching my child struggle daily with the skewed perspective that was caused by his mental illness. He lived in fear of succumbing to psychosis. Despite his easy going, funny nature he was always at war with his own brain. He struggled to find mental structure where none was available and he was vulnerable to faulty belief systems. If there is any comfort in this moment it is knowing that his struggle with bi-polar disorder is over.

He wanted everyone to know that he did not commit suicide. When he ran onto the highway he was experiencing psychotic terror and doing his best to run to safety. He had no idea that he was on a highway and was completely surprised upon impact of the vehicle.

Once the accident happened he was given a choice to continue to live in his body or to join the heavenly family. Knowing that if he stayed he would continue to struggle, experience psychosis more and more often and feel like a burden he chose to be with God. He was tired.

Last, he did not want this to be a stumbling block for his loved ones. Remember him in his happiest moments. In memory of him honor the spirit of Christ by living a mindfully compassionate life every day. Learn about Depression and Bi Polar disorder and support anyone you know.
