The Depression & Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is one of the nations leading peer-based organizations focused on mood disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder. DBSA resources improve the lives of more than four million people each year, and your gift directly connects you to their recovery stories.

DBSA resources coach people—from children all the way to senior citizens—on how to manage their symptoms, access quality treatment, and build a support system that will aid them in their wellness journey. Across the US there are over 500 DBSA peer support groups that meet every week to provide a space for mutual understanding. DBSA online tools help friends and family members of individuals living with depression or bipolar learn about recognizing warning signs and starting mental health conversations with their loved ones. There are also thousands of DBSA advocates all around the country that lobby for policy changes on the municipal, state, and federal level that would improve access to quality mental health care for anyone who needs it.

Thank you for celebrating our wedding with us by supporting this mission that is very close to our hearts.

I volunteer my time and serve as director for the DBSA for many reasons. The three most important reasons to me are that I have seen the powerful therapeutic advocacy on patients and families that have been affected by mood disorders. Secondly, I am forever grateful for the privilege that patients and families have given me; not only an incredible purpose but also a tremendous inspiration. Thirdly, I really believe that DBSA plays a critical role in representing the voice of those affected at the level of policy, education, and research, as well as in the development of new treatments for mood disorders.

Dr. McIntyre is on the DBSA Board of Directors and also serves as the Executive Director of the Brain and Cognition Discovery Foundation in Toronto, Canada. Dr. McIntyre was named by Thomson Reuters in 2014-2019, inclusive, as one of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds”. This distinction is given by publishing the largest number of articles that rank among those most frequently cited by researchers globally in 21 broad fields of science and social science during the previous decade.

Welcome and thank you so much for your support!

DBSA has never been stronger, or better poised, to make powerful contributions to people managing their mental health and wellness. Your dollars matter 100%  now more than ever.

I have focused over the past year with fellow board members and staff on the rising tide of troubles in kids’ mental health and parent crisis, and my attention remains steadfast. Offering parents local and national resources that support crises as they arise relieved numerous families this year and improved recovery time, keeping people safer.

For me, to be effective and timely, I count on collaborating with esteemed colleagues coast to coast, and they count on me. DBSA is a great example. For 15 years, first guided by this organization during my own crises as a parent, and later learning how to guide others, they so saved the day. Today, even more, helpful new programs, like the Supporting Youth Mental Health Initiative, which provides age-appropriate resources to young children, teens, young adults—and their parents— are saving the day for so many more.

As America faces its mental health crisis during this Pandemic, I want every parent and child searching for needed support to receive it, so thanks again for joining me by investing in DBSA’s mission to provide hope, help, support, and education to improve the lives of people who have mood disorders.

Support DBSA as we grow resources for children, teens, and young adults as well as their parents and caregivers.

Expanding youth programs means that DBSA can improve long-term mental health outcomes for young people. By pairing early intervention with well-rounded support services for parents and caregivers, whole families become equipped to face challenges associated with treating a mood disorder.

Be a part of this movement to combat the youth mental health crisis!

DBSA’s Research Priorities initiative seeks to address a multitude of research questions relevant to the unmet needs of people living with mood disorders. The value of peer support services, the effects of delayed diagnoses on treatment efficacy, economic opportunity costs of under-employment and mood disorders in the workplace, and the time lapse between onset of symptoms and an accurate diagnosis are only a few of the questions which this initiative aims to explore. Members of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) will define the scope of the research questions and assist DBSA in identifying principal investigators to conduct the research. The greater our understanding of the experiences of individuals living with mood disorders, the more effectively we can advocate for and influence peer desired outcomes.

Please join us in this effort to formalize a research department to begin making a bigger impact that includes this important research and improving the quality of life for those we serve.
