We invite you to make a gift in honor of this year’s Gerald L. Klerman Award recipients, celebrating the leadership, innovation, and impact they bring to the mental health community. Dr. Gabriel Fries and Dr. Sanjay Mathew represent what is possible when science, care, and lived experience come together to advance hope and healing.

Gabriel R. Fries, PhD | 2026 Young Investigator Award

Dr. Gabriel Fries’ work is deeply personal. Growing up in southern Brazil, he witnessed his brother live with bipolar disorder for more than two decades without access to adequate care or understanding. That experience continues to drive his research today. Through his work, Dr. Fries is advancing our understanding of the biological mechanisms behind mood disorders, with the goal of developing more personalized and effective treatments for those who need them most.

Sanjay J. Mathew, MD | 2026 Senior Investigator Award

Dr. Sanjay Mathew has dedicated more than 25 years to advancing the treatment of severe and treatment-resistant mood disorders. In his remarks, he reflected on the mentors and leaders who shaped his path—many of whom have also been recognized with the same award. That legacy of mentorship continues to inform his work today. Through innovative clinical trials and groundbreaking research, Dr. Mathew has helped advance new approaches to treating depression and related conditions, improving outcomes for individuals living with complex mental health challenges.

In honor of their work and the future they are helping to shape, we invite you to make a gift today. Your support helps expand access to peer support and ensures that more individuals living with mood disorders can receive life-saving resources.
