Since 1990, Americans have recognized the first full week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week, following the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)’s advocacy to establish this important event. This year, Mental Illness Awareness Week will be observed from October 6 to 12, with World Mental Health Day falling on October 10. The theme for this year is “My Mental Health at Work.”

Mood disorders can greatly affect our work lives, as we spend much of our time on both paid and unpaid tasks. Those with depression may face decreased interest and fatigue that impact focus and attendance, while individuals with bipolar disorder may struggle with fluctuating symptoms that disrupt workflow. Finding the right work style and environment is essential for maintaining a healthy relationship with work and supporting self-care.
