speak up! “Not only did we get training in recovery philosophy and consumer self-determination, but we received skills training in modules that Social Security will reimburse. It was among the very best trainings I have received in my professional life--top two or three. Extraordinary effects with the consumers.” - Wayne Gregory 5/05 training Waco, Texas

Peer Specialist Training
Because we believe that the support of peers is essential to wellness and recovery, DBSA is a national leader in training people recovering from mental illnesses to use their experiences to work with others as Peer Specialists. Our Peer Specialist training course features a nationally-developed curriculum that orients participants to a recovery philosophy and prepares them to use peer-delivered services to enhance wellness and treatment strategies.
DBSA offers peer specialist training in affiliation with Appalachian Consulting Group, Inc., innovators of the Georgia Certified Peer Specialist Project that pioneered Medicaid-billable peer support services.
DBSA’s 4.5-day, 26-module core peer specialist training curriculum provides participants with a thorough grounding in goal-centered rehabilitation and recovery concepts; builds skills in creating helpful peer relationships throughout the recovery process; and focuses on ethical practice. The core curriculum can be enhanced and adapted to meet local needs. Training is delivered by a diverse group of nationally-recognized expert trainers.
Following training, participants are eligible to complete a written peer specialist examination on principles of peer support and recovery and receive a training certificate.
DBSA also delivers targeted peer specialist training and testing for these audiences:
- Peer-promoted whole health and wellness
- Veterans
- Faith-based
- Late life
