Pathways to Recovery and DBSA

In 2006, DBSA was granted permission to develop an 8 week curriculum based on University of Kansas' School of Social Welfare's Pathways to Recovery workbooks. The Pathways to Recovery workbooks are based on a model of self-assessment, self-discovery and planning that helps individuals set life goals and realize their dreams.

Since 2006, seventy-five DBSA chapter leaders have been trained to facilitate Pathways to Recovery groups in their communities. Here's what some of our chapters have said about Pathways to Recovery:

“I made my personal turnaround during the [Pathways to Recovery] sessions. I cannot tell you how life changing it has been. I am doing water aerobics every morning....sticking to a diet and looking into further education in psychiatric rehabilitation."

“Pathways has helped me focus on a plan of action to accomplish goals I have set for myself. It also had a great impact on the people in the class I taught. One person is now working, another has changed their goals and have achieved two of those goals.”

"My own recovery is richer -- and participants from prior [groups] have made real strides since their "turn-around" to recovery. A woman who had been suicidal shared that she makes positive plans and has embraced life again.”

“In my first group, one person in the middle of the 8 weeks decided that she wanted to move out of an AFC home. She hadn't thought about it before taking the class. She is now living successfully on her own as a result of Pathways.”

"Everyone [who participated in the first group] is wanting a second out of the book. It helps me keep on track with my recovery and has aided others to look at their recovery in a better light. I've had nothing but compliments.”

DBSA is not currently offering any trainings to become a Pathways to Recovery facilitator, but we are happy to share our lesson plans and resources with interested DBSA chapter leaders. Individuals are also welcome to purchase a copy of the workbook at the website above and work through the book on their own.
