DBSA to Give Opening Keynote at Regional Recovery Conference

August_eUpdate_TrainingDBSA Director of Training Matt Mattson, MS, will deliver the opening keynote address, and two workshops, at the September 24-25 mental health conference, Roads to Recovery ’07: Accelerating Toward Mental Health Recovery and Resiliency, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Sponsored by the Cuyahoga County Community Mental Health Board, the “Roads to Recovery ’07” conference is expected to draw hundreds of participants. It will host an exhibition hall, a consumer art display, a peer support drop-in center, as well as many workshops for consumers, family members and mental health providers. The goals of these workshops are to

  • Give examples of successful recovery models and best practices.
  • Help both consumers and providers put those successful recovery models into daily practice.
  • Help establish a trusting relationship between consumers, family members and providers.
  • Educate that recovery from mental illness is possible.

Mattson’s keynote, “Transformation through Partnerships,” will discuss partnerships between consumers, family members and providers as the key to changing the mental health system. Mattson will also give a motivational workshop called “Making Grass Grow: Recruitment Skills for Grass Roots Groups,” with tips for rallying the help needed to kick-start a local community mental health organization. Managing conflict in a mental health organization is the theme of his second workshop, “The Art of Group Harmony: Conflict Management for Mental Health Organizations.” This interactive session will focus on group dynamics, as well as how to communicate and diffuse conflict.
