DBSA Delaware County

No Meeting Monday, July 5th, 2010

DBSA Delaware County, Inc., founded in July 1999, is proud to be affiliated with the Chicago based Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance. This important tie to a parent organization with such resources only bolsters the assistance we can offer our members.

Like DBSA's roots around a kitchen table over 25 years ago, DBSA "Delco" left the confines of
several hospital based venues, to now enjoy the large, multi-classroom environment of Springfield High School. Our gratitude is extended to the Principal and dedicated teachers.

This location affords us the opportunity of serving the needs of the student body as newly diagnosed teens struggle to understand and cope. The adult(18+) membership thrives on diversity of issues and comraderie of ideas, giving all an opportunity to share. The kids break off for their own sharing after check-in.

Our weekly meetings are each Monday at Springfield High School, 49 West Leamy Ave., Springfield, Delaware County, PA, 7 to 9PM in Rm. 113.

What’s the group like? How many attend?

Currently our chapter supports patients, family/friends, college-aged, and teen members, with the average turnout of 20-25 per meeting. The group is most often evenly split, male to female, with all age groups represented. Of particular note, younger 20-something members enjoy the back and forth with everyone, offering fresh ideas...they feel most welcome and included.

Many times we feel more comfortable with members our own age - every demographic is covered in our membership. Our teen members feel very much a part and invariably prefer an adult presence. There are rooms available for  family discussions also, another key group that attends frequently.

I cannot  emphasize enough the bravery you are showing in considering attending a support group...it really is the next step in acknowledging you have a mood disorder. Secondly, you know it just won't go away tomorrow...there is currently no cure for bipolar or depression, though there are numerous options to recovery and stability.
