Register for Online Self-Study Course

Course Description (1.5 Credits):
One of the major recovery tools that peer specialists bring to their peers is their own recovery stories. This training course will help each participant experience the power and potential of their own story as a recovery tool to educate and inspire peers. Participants will be guided in methods to craft an honest, authentic story that focuses on strengths, and in how to effectively communicate that story to others in appropriate, meaningful ways. The presenter will explore the difference between an ‘illness story’ and a ‘recovery story’ and guide participants in considering ways in which they can use key parts of their stories to speak to others in their own unique situations.

Course Description (1.5 Credits):
The newly-emerging profession of personal/life/success coaching has many parallels to the work of peer specialists. Peer specialists and personal coaches help support others in articulating specific personal goals and taking steps toward those goals. Both foster hope, personal responsibility, and self-determination in those they serve. And both seek to create a sense of enthusiasm and “can-do” spirit within others. Step outside the traditional mental health arena in this course to see what the coaching profession can teach you.

According to recently published research, people with serious mental illnesses served by public mental health systems die, on average, 25 years earlier than the general population. This increased risk is largely due to preventable medical conditions and risk factors that include obesity, smoking, substance abuse, inadequate access to medical care, and side effects of some psychiatric medications. This training course will outline the challenges to achieving overall health for people with mental illnesses and the implications of these challenges. Participants will be introduced to emerging peer-led strategies to help others manage their health effectively.
