Course Description (1.5 Credits): One of the major recovery tools that peer specialists bring to their peers is their own recovery stories. This training course will help each participant experience the power and potential of their own story as a recovery tool to educate and inspire peers. Participants will be guided in methods to craft an honest, authentic story that focuses on strengths, and in how to effectively communicate that story to others in appropriate, meaningful ways. The presenter will explore the difference between an ‘illness story’ and a ‘recovery story’ and guide participants in considering ways in which they can use key parts of their stories to speak to others in their own unique situations.

Course Description (1.5 Credits): The newly-emerging profession of personal/life/success coaching has many parallels to the work of peer specialists. Peer specialists and personal coaches help support others in articulating specific personal goals and taking steps toward those goals. Both foster hope, personal responsibility, and self-determination in those they serve. And both seek to create a sense of enthusiasm and “can-do” spirit within others. Step outside the traditional mental health arena in this course to see what the coaching profession can teach you.

Course Description (1.5 Credits): According to recently published research, people with serious mental illnesses served by public mental health systems die, on average, 25 years earlier than the general population. This increased risk is largely due to preventable medical conditions and risk factors that include obesity, smoking, substance abuse, inadequate access to medical care, and side effects of some psychiatric medications. This training course will outline the challenges to achieving overall health for people with mental illnesses and the implications of these challenges. Participants will be introduced to emerging peer-led strategies to help others manage their health effectively.

Course Description (1.5 Credits): Have you ever attended a support group where everyone sat around trading stories about how terrible their lives are? Did participants end up leaving feeling worse than they did when they arrived? In this session we’ll explore ways peer specialists can turn group conversation around to focus the group on hope and recovery. Specific topics will include: person-first language, comfort contracts, beginning and ending groups with recovery in mind, and more.

Course Description (1.5 Credits): As peer specialists go to work alongside social workers, psychologists and other clinical providers, a clear definition of their complimentary roles is critical. In this course, participants will explore the unique role of peers in a multi-disciplinary setting and learn the basics on effectively interpreting their role and worth to others. The course will present guidelines on how peer support services can complement clinical services while still retaining a recovery focus.

Course Description (1.5 Credits): You’ve taken a job as a peer specialist. Can your peer friendships continue ethically and legitimately? Do your friends think you’ve changed? Participants in this course will explore the philosophical framework of peer support and peer support services and learn practical strategies for pro-actively planning for their new role as peer service providers.

Course Description (1.5 Credits): A trauma-informed approach to services is based on the recognition that symptoms expressed by survivors of war and disasters, crime, sexual abuse and domestic violence are directly related to traumatic experiences and often cause mental health and substance abuse concerns. This course will provide participants with basic understanding of principles of trauma-informed services in order to improve the effectiveness of programs and systems of service.
